Understanding Anal Glands: A Guide for Dog Owners

By Kimberly Babcock, RVT | March 30, 2025

Anal glands—though not a glamorous topic—are important to understand for your dog's health and comfort. Every dog has two small glands located near the anus, which normally express a scented fluid during bowel movements, helping dogs mark territory and communicate.

Signs Your Dog Might Need Help

Dogs typically express these glands naturally, but sometimes they may struggle to do so. Here are common signs that your dog might be having trouble:• Scooting: Your dog drags their rear across the floor to relieve discomfort.• Excessive Licking or Chewing: Constant licking or chewing around the tail area.• Unpleasant Odor: A noticeably strong, fishy smell coming from your dog.• Swelling or Redness: Visible irritation or swelling around the rear.

Why Anal Gland Care is Important

When dogs can't naturally express their anal glands, the fluid can build up, causing significant discomfort. If untreated, impacted glands can become infected and may even lead to painful abscesses, which often require veterinary intervention.

Preventing Issues Through Regular Care

Regular grooming appointments or veterinary visits to have your dog’s anal glands checked and expressed can prevent discomfort and complications. Some dogs naturally struggle more than others, especially smaller breeds or pets with allergies. If you notice signs of discomfort or unusual behavior, schedule a veterinary visit promptly to avoid more serious health problems.
